What are the health and other benefits of wearing Simply Silk's pure silk clothing ?

  • Silk absorbs moisture and unlike many man made fibres, it will wick perspiration away from your skin
  • Because silk is a natural fibre, wearing it creates a calming effect*
  • The office environment is full of electro magnetic energy from computers and other equipment, which has a detrimental effect on the balance of the body. Silk balances the body, so it is particularly beneficial to sit on it in an office environment*
  • Wearing or sitting on silk enhances concentration*
  • Sleeping in silk enhances better sleep through the natural energy source*
  • Silk has great thermal properties ensuring it is warm in winter and cool in summer
  • Because of its high absorbency, it is easily dyed and so is available in many deep colours
  • Silk retains its shape, drapes well, caresses the figure, and shimmers with a lustre all its own
  • Silk is non-allergic and is ideal for people with sensitive skins
  • Silk does not shrink like other fibres
* Comments from kinesiologist Sandra Cabot (http://www.sentiencetherapies.com).

Silk is a fabric that makes its own statement. Say "silk" to someone and notice their reaction. Silk is a royal fibre and for centuries has had a reputation as one of the most luxurious and sensuous fabrics. It is automatically associated with wealth and success.

What is the best way to care for silk ?

Silk garments can be worn in all seasons. It is a natural protein fibre like human hair and is taken from the cocoon of the silkworm. Most silk fabrics can be hand washed and/or dry cleaned.

Silk is delicate when wet, which is why the twisting motion of the washing machine can damage it and make the garment fall out of shape. So when you wash your silk garments don’t wring them, but roll them in a towel. Silk dries quickly and should not be put in an automatic dryer. Hang it out to dry out of direct sunlight. Iron silk on medium heat, preferably inside out while still damp.

A good shampoo works well on silk. It will remove any oil and will revitalize your silk. Don’t use an alkaline shampoo or one which contains ingredients such as wax and petroleum, or their derivatives, as these products will leave a residue on your silk and may cause oily spots. If static or clinging is a problem with your silks, a good hair conditioner (see above cautions) may be used in the rinse water. Vinegar used in the rinse water is also known to maintain the lustre of silk. Never use bleach on your silk garment.

What is the history of silk ?

Silk is one of the oldest textile fibres known to man. The Chinese have used it since the 27th century BC. Silk is mentioned by Aristotle and became a valuable commodity both in Greece and Rome. During the Roman Empire, silk was sold for its weight in gold but at Simply Silk we make it much more affordable!

Today, silk garments are prized for their versatility, wearability, elegance and comfort. Silk, or “soie” as it is known in French, is the strongest natural fibre. A steel filament of the same diameter as silk will break before a filament of silk.
